Although almost thermostats avail similar installation methods, it’s profitable to read all before installing the new one. Otherwise, you might be stuck in the cold. Ensure to read them and study each picture carefully.
- Step 2 – Shut down power to A/C and furnace
At the breaker box, you need to shut off all the switches that connect to the thermostat, air conditioner, and furnace. Keep in mind that shutting down the power will diminish the chances of electrical damages as you get rid of the old device and replace the new one.
- Step 3 – Remove the old thermostat
In case the thermostats have a base and sub-base, you should move the entire device away and leave exposed wires and an empty wall. If the exposed wires are gross and corroded, scratch the ends with a small knife until they look bright.
- Step 4 – Take a picture of the wires and disconnect them from the old gadget
Taking a picture is a cool way to help us remember how the wires are connected. It is considered as a reference for which color wire should come with each suitable position. Take a small screwdriver in order to unfasten the screws that are holding the wires. But, bear in mind to keep them hanging out of the wall.
- Step 5 – Install the new thermostat mount and connect the wires
After removing the old mount, start applying the new one. Don’t worry too much because connecting the wires is not such a difficult task. Look at the new mount and then you can see some letters. Each will represent for the different colored wire as R – red, G – green, etc. Just insert each colored wire in its matching initialed receptor.
- Step 6 – Twist faceplate mount to wall
You should install some anchors and drywall in such a way that you can strongly twist on the faceplate mount. Or you can take advantage of the drywall and anchors from your old thermostat.
- Step 7 – Put the new gadget on the wall
If extra length is exposed, you should replace all the wires back into the wall. Put the thermostat flush against the wall and kindly above the wall plate. Slide it down, so it takes the grooves on the wall plate to sit in place. In case that your best programmable thermostat is not in a suitable place, you should call for a professional’s support.
- Step 8 – Turn on the power to A/C and furnace
Turn on the switches in the breaker box to recover the power. Remember to give it a minute to kick on. Ah, don’t forget to replace the batteries, too.
- Step 9 – Check to ensure the new device is working
You need to set the thermostat so that the air conditioner and furnace will come on at different times. Give them at least 5 minutes to trigger. In case that the thermostat does not work accurately, you should repeat your steps to find out the mistake.
I hope that with 9 steps above, you can replace your new thermostat with ease. Time to make your home more comfortable and relaxed! Or in case that you have something to ask, let I know and I will help you.
